I am Katerina Arvaniti, a Project Management Expert with extensive experience in implementing and supporting European research projects. I studied Accounting and Finance at the University of Thessaly and have worked for several years with the Research Committee of the University of Thessaly. Currently, I am the legal representative of CROWNEST, contributing to project management, reporting, and dissemination activities


Please provide a short overview of your job and its relation to STEM. What is your current job? What is the field about?

My job focuses on the management and administration of European-funded research projects in the field of innovation, technology, and sustainability. It involves coordinating teams, monitoring progress, preparing technical and financial reports, and ensuring compliance with EU funding requirements. This role is closely linked to STEM as it supports research and technological development initiatives across Europe.


Who or what inspired you to follow this career path / start this job?

I have always been fascinated by how research and technology can solve real-world problems. Working alongside researchers and engineers motivated me to pursue a career where I could contribute to the success of innovative STEM projects through effective management and coordination.


What does your typical working day look like?

A typical day includes communicating with project partners, organizing meetings, monitoring deliverables, preparing reports for the European Commission, and managing project finances. I also contribute to the dissemination of project results through publications, workshops, and events.


Please give an overview of your study path and how you got into this career. If you could start all over again, how you would change the career path? Has there been an educational experience (formal/informal/traineeship/...) that helped you? Did your colleagues follow similar study and career paths?

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from the University of Thessaly. I started my career as an assistant accountant and later joined the Research Committee of the University of Thessaly, where I began managing European research projects. This experience helped me develop skills in project management, reporting, and financial coordination. If I could start over, I would pursue additional studies in project management or European policy to further strengthen my expertise.


What are the professional & personal key skills needed to do your job?

  • Project Management: I coordinate multiple European research projects, ensuring milestones and reports are delivered on time.

  • Financial Management: I handle budgeting, cost analysis, and financial reporting for EU-funded projects.

  • Communication: I liaise between researchers, stakeholders, and funding bodies to ensure smooth collaboration.

  • Organization: I plan and oversee events, workshops, and dissemination activities.

  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring compliance with EU financial and reporting requirements

What are the main challenges in your job?

Managing complex international projects requires strong coordination, time management, and adaptability. One of the main challenges is ensuring clear communication among diverse teams across Europe and staying updated with changing EU regulations.


What is your advice to students?

Be open to learning beyond your main field of study. Combine technical knowledge with soft skills like communication and teamwork. Experience in international projects is highly valuable.

Encourage students to explore opportunities that combine management, technology, and research. Support them in developing both analytical and interpersonal skills, which are essential for success in STEM-related careers.
