DS2 was featured in issue 503 of NetWeek, the Greek ICT magazine. The article is a Q&A with Anna Triantafyllou, Director of the Innovation Lab at Athens Technology Center (ATC). ATC is one of our consortium partners, and the piece shows how the technology created by ATC under the scope of the DS2 project is helping to shape Europe’s data infrastructure.

Why data spaces, and why now? Europe holds a huge amount of valuable data, but much of it is locked inside separate systems and sectors. As Anna explains, the real challenge is sharing data securely while its producers keep control over it. Data spaces are Europe’s answer: decentralised environments where organisations can collaborate on data without giving up ownership.

Where does DS2 fit in? DS2 (DataSpace, DataShare 2.0) addresses a practical gap: how different data spaces can work with each other. To do that, the project is building a modular toolkit that connects data spaces across Europe while respecting each participant’s rules.

Through its Innovation Lab, ATC is developing three key modules of the DS2 toolkit:

  • DARC is a multilingual AI conversational assistant. Users describe what they need in plain language and are guided to find, assess and use relevant data.

  • DRM uses blockchain to create a trusted audit trail. It records who used which data, with whom, when and under what terms.

  • PCR helps organisations create and apply data-use policies in a machine-readable form.

DARC has been recognised by the European Commission’s Innovation Radar. Anna sees this as confirmation that AI can go beyond typical chatbots and become a natural interface to complex data infrastructure.

Real-world impact. The DS2 toolkit is being tested in real settings:

  • smart farming in Thessaly, Greece

  • urban sustainability in Cluj-Napoca, Romania

  • air-quality monitoring in Slovenia

  • a cross-cutting pilot that links all three

In Anna’s words, this shows that “the conversation about data spaces is not theoretical.” It responds to real needs in agriculture, cities, the environment and public policy.
