European Big Data Value Forum (EBDVF25) was once again the main gathering for Europe’s big data community. DS2 was proud to be present for the second year in a row, hosting the workshop Connecting the Dots: Interoperability and Policy in European Data Spaces,” moderated by Gabriella Laatikainen of VTT. Despite being scheduled late in the day, the session gathered an engaged audience, eager to explore how interoperability and policy can shape the future of European data spaces.

The workshop brought together members of the academia, industry, and SMEs. They all shared practical insights. Juha-Pekka Soininen of VTT presented the DS2 interoperability solution, showcasing how technical frameworks can enable seamless data sharing. The Policy Lifecycle in Data Spaces with an emphasize on the importance of governance and adaptability was presented by Stefano Modafferi from the University of Southampton introduced . While Yannis Kotsinos (Cactus Digital) presented the UPCAST use case on policy-driven interoperability in data spaces, Andra Tanase (Transilvania IT)  presented the DS2 use cases and it explained how to put data spaces into practice. Erkki Siira of VTT presented the Waste Water Test Bed Data Space, a small-scale but powerful example of how focused use cases can drive innovation.

Some of the key takeaways are:

  • Europe is taking seriously the need for having European values and solutions in AI.

  • Update of data space status confirmed that there is room for practical approaches for data space interoperability and data sharing that DS2 promotes.

  • Common European Data Spaces need smaller, focused, use case centric data spaces that have clear business cases backing them.

  • Transformation from basic technical solution towards enabling actual use of data is happening now. Mature technical solutions are needed now.

  • Discussions and presentations gave us new insight on how to align the DS2 vision with the AI factories and data based AI development in Europe.

EBDVF25 showed us that Europe is not only envisioning but actively building the future of interoperable, policy-driven data spaces. Stay tuned!
