Secure Infrastructure from the Edge: How the E2C Connector Enhances the DS2 Ecosystem

Every successful data-driven initiative depends on a secure, reliable foundation: the ability to safely extract data from the physical shop floor and bring it into the digital world. Yet, as organizations look to participate in modern data spaces, they face a dual challenge. Data providers must avoid exposing sensitive on-premises systems to the open internet, while data consumers require a scalable way to continuously ingest and process incoming streams.

To solve this integration bottleneck at the very source, the DS2 project introduces the Edge-to-Cloud Connector (E2C). This powerful module establishes a secure digital pipeline between on-premises assets and leading cloud environments, ensuring that data is continuously extracted, transformed, and ready for seamless sharing.

Bridging the Gap Between Operations and the Cloud

The E2C Connector acts as a protective shield and an efficiency driver for both ends of the data space transaction:

●        For Data Providers: E2C securely offloads raw data from internal backend systems and streams it to scalable cloud infrastructure. By acting as an intermediary layer, it completely eliminates the need for direct external access to operational systems, drastically minimizing cybersecurity exposure while reducing the processing load on local hardware.

●        For Data Consumers: The connector continuously monitors shared endpoints and ingests incoming data into a scalable staging layer. This allows organizations to securely validate, monitor, and process datasets before distributing them to downstream business applications.

Vendor-Neutral Streaming and Standardized Integration

At its core, E2C combines continuous data streaming with ultimate architectural freedom. Instead of locking companies into a single ecosystem, the module is entirely cloud-platform agnostic. It seamlessly streams data into major platforms like Azure IoT, AWS IoT, and Cumulocity IoT using a standardized, vendor-neutral format.

Thanks to its modular adapter architecture, the extracted data can either be routed directly into a cloud platform or fed immediately into the Data Detection and Transformation (DDT) module for real-time quality refining. Built entirely on the OpenAPI standard and utilizing advanced time-windowing capabilities, E2C turns complex industrial integration into a simple, scalable, and plug-and-play operation.

Conclusion: The Foundational Pipeline for Trusted Data

Data sharing cannot happen without absolute security at the entry point. The Edge-to-Cloud Connector eliminates the traditional risks of industrial data extraction, giving companies the peace of mind to unlock their silos. By combining cloud independence with secure streaming, E2C serves as the ultimate starting point for efficient and trusted collaboration across the entire DS2 ecosystem.
